I know I said this on twitter already but this game is so lovely! The writing/art is great and so are the characters. You really know how to make for a sweet story (no pun intended concerning the food...) and this game left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Definitely my favorite game from ilujam that I've played so far! I would love love love to see more of this in the future.
A downloadable visual novel for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
In drear-nighted December,
Too happy, happy brook,
Thy bubblings ne'er remember
Apollo's summer look;
But with a sweet forgetting,
They stay their crystal fretting,
Never, never petting
About the frozen time.
— John Keats, In Drear-Nighted December
Sweetwater is a visual novel demo made for the International Love Ultimatum 2, aka #ilujam, and the Fairytale Jam concurrently! The jam build contains the first section of what could become a longer story, though I'm not sure when I'll find time to return to it, as I'm currently working on another full-length VN. Stay tuned!
NOTE: If you'd rather not give the player character a custom name, leave the field blank and press enter! There's a default; I just wanted to learn how to implement the feature.
I had a blast working on this throughout June (despite fighting with writer's block all month)! I learned a lot about creating imagemaps and GUI assets, and a lot about Ren'py in general!
I'm also just thrilled that I got to make a game about a mermaid, honestly. Local horror writer decides to chill for once and try to write something sweet.
For FGJ: The "fairytale" theme is based on the common genre hallmark in which two strangers of different species meet by chance and fall in love. It demonstrates the necessity of kindness and charity while acknowledging the fact that trust is precious, and placing trust in a stranger can be a gamble. The story also touches on themes of ostracization within a fantastical context, and how removing oneself from an unhealthy environment can lead to positive change. I would rate this game as anywhere from "Kid" to "Teen" friendly.

Wow, this is really nice! The art and writing are both lovely and definitely have a magical fairytale feeling. I believed in the connection between the characters and it's cute to have it revolve around baked goods - but I also enjoyed the sense that there was some more darkness in the mermaid's world, in contrast to the very sweet world of the confectioner, that would come up as their relationship continued. I'll definitely play more if you ever continue it!
Just a gameplay test.
